Newfoundland and Labrador, September 2004
Charlotte Jones arranged for me to work with a a group of teenagers from Roncalli High In Port Saunders on The Northern Peninsula.Over the course of are time together we will be exploring and investigating their landscape.
Day One
Meeting the group, Field Trip.
Our first visit out into the wilds of the Northern Peninsula today, Had to resort to plan b,
As the weather was very windy and wet! No scanning or drawing, but we did get a lot of information from from the Interpetive Centre, which highlighted the effects of human activity on the barrens of the Northern Penninsula.
A lot of interesting ideas and possibilities from today. Tomorrow we will look at the content collected, and if the weather is fine we will visit the sites for further investigation.
Day Two: Detectives
The next day we were detectives, bagging and tagging, collecting evidence of human activity in the landscape.
Day Three
The group put up their profiles and identities, Have alook. I will be going back to ireland to work with a group of kids in Sligo, the plan is to use this space to develop work and communicate together.
Back in Ireland
Tommorow 6th October we are going on a field trip to the Burren, We will be collecting and gathering, making sound and visuals diaries of our Journeys.I have collected a number of different containers to store our samples.
Tuesday12th October 2004
working in the school, auditing their equipment before working with the group on thursday,
exploring possible ideas, i think what amazed everybody on our trip to the Burren, was the diversity of life and species in such a small area, which could be compared with the Northern Peninsula in Newfoundland, on the surface it looks barren but upon closer examination. in a small area you can see a hugh expanse of time.
Brendan bagged and tagged a hazelnut that he found on our field trip.
One thing we could do , which could be interesting, to monitor a space, or activity over a a period of time. We could do this in all three areas. Using Quadrats we could map out one meter square and monitor the happenings what ever they might be using a webcam capturing happening everyhalf hour and using other media make observations every week.
Lets see what happens on Thrursday 21st.

Thursday 21st
I forgot to take an image of us working together, well we went through all the evidence we had collected from our trip to the burren. There was six of us today,
GraceC and
StephenF went through and started editing video they had taken of the Grikes, which looked interesting great sound.
StephenF uploaded one of his polaroids which is a wonderfull picture full of atmosphere.
EythanM spent most of his time drawing what he collected while
ConorM and
GrahamG worked on the website and scanned images.
We had a dissusion around human activity in the burren and will be exploring this in more detail on November 4th. Gramham started the exchange today by posting a comment on
AngelaH webpage.

we are going to be mapping and surveying human activity and behaviour on a local level. Initially mapping and recording in the school. This recording will be in the form of drawing, video and photography. We will also be in contact with the other school. I am very intersted in the strategies used within psychogeography, as a way of investigating the landscape. We will be employing some of these strategies initially in our investigations.
November 4th

Yesterday we had lots of fun, we got an A3 map of the school and the students started to locate themselves within the map,
locating other rooms and areas they frequent during their day. They have different names made up for diffeent areas in the school. The Chamber of secrets, The dark room etc. Which was very interesting.
I had orgainised a online meeting with the other students in Roncalli for 12.30 Irish time so we had to work together
to find a context for this exchange and meeting.
We spent time on the web doing research and finding other exchange projects, we came up with good material. looking at Glowlab and their online projects proved inspirational for the studenrts and tied into our work with mapping and documenting human activity and behaviour.
So our task was simple and we will have the results next week. I have put all tne information under exchange projects.
The students then mapped their journey to these places using a video camera, Drawing and Poloroid camera.

Well i have been back over to Port Saunders to reconnect with the students at Roncalli High, we worked exploring their school surroundings, through mental maps and observations using digital cameras and video cameras. It is very interesting to review the footage and see their viewpoint, which monitored activities and focused on the activities in the corridors and the passageways in their school,
These spaces are their spaces and ones which they pass through everyday.
January17th

Looking at the video camera footage which has been surveying the students activity. Having a look back at the footage that the students had taken while visiting the burren, Projecting back up their activities while in the Burren. We are working in The Model Niland Education room which is great as we have much more space, it gives us an opportunity to look at the other exhibitions and time to get to know the space so we can work to fit the space.
February1st

Drawing and paintings from projection exploring differnt tools for mark making, pens, markers etc. It was decided to draw directly onto the walls of the gallery. Adding text to suppport our research into people and the landscape.
